“Don’t forget the iron”, by Carol Levin

Carol Levin, a fashion designer/textile surface artist, first exhibited at Doubleshot with her  sequined artwork titled “Life”,  constructed of sequins and beads hand-sewn onto fabric in the Haitian Drapo Vodou style.

Life – by Carol Levin

Now Carol is back with her latest works; all musings on life, spirituality and contemporary society. This time her chosen medium is oil on canvas, and her art incorporates many of the items she has collected over the years, with metronomes symbolising that time is ticking on, Buddhas, and shoes. Carol noticed, that stepping out of her shoes, they were often going in two different directions. Prevalent, too, is the sewing machine. Important to Carol with her history as a fashion designer, but it also depicts women’s work. Carol says, the sewing machine is fundamental to what’s holding the fibres of Life together. Around twenty miniature sewing machines feature in Carol’s private collection! What we love about Carol’s art? It causes endless discussion. Viewing art objects remains an extremely personal experience.

New look

Doubleshot is back and loving the new space. It feels awesome.

Reopening rescheduled

Floor is in, ceiling is out. We have 10sqm more space and slowly things are coming together. Unfortunately not for a reopening tomorrow, but we will be back. Watch this space. The MIRAGE will be fired up either on Wednesday or Thursday this week and you’ll be able to smell coffee again from Doubleshot.

Extensions

extensions at Doubleshot

When you think you have the best builders in the country and you’ve hooked them up to a continual source of caffeine, you think, “sure they can do this all in a week”. Stop. Think again. Forget all the promises. A week has come and gone, caffeine resources are dripping to an end, the pourovers at home are tasting better than ever, the Tim Wendelboe supply of beautiful coffees definitely won’t make it to the reopening, and Felix, the Jack Russell, can sniff a TW from a square mile!

Okay, so the wall to 10 square metres more of Doubleshot is down. The new walls are up. We’ve happily taken over part of the neighbouring liquor store (Maybe a first? Coffeebar takes over bottle store?!) and we’ve impishly removed the old and ugly ceiling boards to expose the steel I-beams. If it weren’t for all the dust and rubble, we would look industrial. We might have to wait another week. We hope to re-open Doubleshot on Monday 20 September. We can’t wait! By then we’ll all be on the lookout for a triplette of caffeine thirsty sharks, swimming from Waalre to Doubleshot.

Tim Wendelboe in a day

Sitting in Frankfurt and waiting for the night flight back to South Africa, with no chance of a good coffee anywhere in a radius of at least 300km, the decision to fly to Oslo and Tim Wendelboe became ever more appealing. Then I saw a Mirage of what seemed like a Strada, and jumped onto the next plane heading due north towards Oslo.

Tim Wendelboe’s espressobar is dominated by the 12k Probat roaster and is otherwise minimalist with just limited seating. Unfortunately the Strada wasn’t in operation, but Tim Varney pulled an awesome shot of TW espresso on the La Marzocco FB80 to kickstart my Tim Wendelboe experience. This was followed by a Kenyan Mugaga on the Clover, topping my day with an Hacienda la Esmeralda on the pourover.  I loved its honey-like sweetness with notes of jasmine and bergamot coming through on this tea of coffees.

At Tim Wendelboe’s, Oslo

Thanks to this spur of the moment decision to fly to Oslo, for a limited period we are able to offer Tim Wendelboe coffees at Doubleshot. We currently have the Geisha Hacienda la Esmeralda on the pourover and Tim Wendelboe espresso in the hop from Thursday.

On the coffee table and to enjoy coffee with Tim Wendelboe long after our TW coffee is finished….
